Create an SMS Chatbot

SMS Chatbots are a great way to have your contacts participate in Advocacy Actions, or expand your contact list. Here we’ll explain how to create an SMS Chatbot Conversation.

Step One: Click “Create an outreach action” on your dashboard. From the drop down menu, select “Create an SMS Chatbot”

Step Two: Create a Title for your SMS Chatbot.

Step Three: Choose which campaign you’d like your message to live in. You can choose from existing campaigns or create a new one. 

Step Four: Choose an Advocacy Action to link. You can use an existing Advocacy Action, create a new one, or choose not to link any action. The Advocacy Action you link will be where your SMS Chatbot will complete the action after finishing a conversation with your supporters, and where submissions will be stored.

Chatbot - Title, campaign, and linked actionStep Five: Compose your chatbot conversation. In the left column, you’ll define your message and questions. In the right column, you’ll define the type of response you expect from your supporters. Their responses will be stored in the component associated to that response type.

Note: Messages can be up to 160 characters and may include first name and One-Time Link tokens.

Pro Tip: When you don't expect a response you can select No response expected, automatically move on from the dropdown menu. This is useful for the final message in a conversation. 

Step Six: Once you’ve finalized your conversation, review the Opt-Out Keywords and Message. Ensure you’re following all relevant laws and regulations in the jurisdiction you operate in.

Sharing your Chatbot

Now that you've built your chatbot conversation there are two ways you can share this chatbot with the world: Sending from New/Mode and promoting with a Keyword. You can choose either of these, or use them both with any chatbot action!

Using a Keyword

Step One: Navigate to the Keyword tab

Step Two: Enter in a keyword, then check for availability. If your Keyword is available, you can add it to your account for $25USD/Month. If you already have keywords purchased through New/Mode, you can choose to associate them with your new Chatbot. 

Step Three: Enter a group name to add new contacts in to. You can learn more about New/Mode groups here.

Step Four: Press Review. Ensure your chatbot is configured correctly, and confirm that you are communicating with these contacts in a way that fits within the laws and regulations of the jurisdictions of the sender and receiver of this message. After this, click on Activate. This will activate your keyword and launch your chatbot action.

Sending  from New/Mode

Step One: Navigate to the Send tab.

Step Two: Choose the country your messages will be sent in.

Step Three: Select the group(s) your message will be sent to.

Step Four: Send a test message! Enter the number you’d like the test to be sent to, and press the Test button.

Step Five: You can choose to start sending now or to schedule your sends. If you schedule your sends, you can choose a window for the dates your message will send, as well as time of day. Once you’ve chosen this, click on Review.

Step Six: You’ll be taken to a review screen. Ensure your message is configured correctly, and confirm that you are communicating with these contacts in a way that fits within the laws and regulations of the jurisdictions of the sender and receiver of this message. After this, click that Send button! 

You can review your message Analytics on the Responses & Analytics tab.
