Party Specific or Region Specific messaging, at your service! Conditional Messaging allows you to create different email content for targeted decision-makers based on whether they support or oppose your organization's efforts.
This feature is available on the Growing Organization Plan and above
Conditional Messaging requires three things:
1. Multiple recipients selected to receive messages in your email campaign
2. Create different message variations
3. Choose which recipients receive specific message variations
Verify Conditional Messaging is enabled
1. Create an email campaign with multiple recipients.
2.In the Message section, Conditional messaging should appear at the bottom of the page, below the letter content.
Setting your first condition
In this step, we are going to make sure the first message is only sent if Senator Bill Cassidy is the recipient.
1. Click on Select Recipients, which will bring up a list of all recipients in your campaign.
2. Type in "Bill" in the search box to bring up all recipients containing the name "Bill". Note that you can also use the Position, Jurisdiction, or Party filters to find recipients.
3. Select "Bill Cassidy" and click on Apply Condition
4. To verify this message now has a unique recipient, you should see "Conditions: 1 recipients" on the bottom right hand side of the page.
Clicking the box will open a pop up window confirming your recipient list for this message.
Setting a default message
Now that we've set our first condition, we will want to write another message that will go to any recipient that doesn't have a condition set. In this case, the default message will go to any recipient that is not Senator Bill Cassidy.
1. Click on Add Message Variation at the bottom of the page.
2. Click on "Draft" under Draft Manually
3. Write a new message. If you want to make this the Default Message, hit save on the bottom right.
To add more conditions, you can follow these steps multiple times. Create multiple variations, and click on "Select Recipients" on each variation to choose who gets the message. Just make sure you have one message without any recipients selected to act as the default message!
Other tips
Our targets are formatted as: Name (Position), Jurisdiction, Party
Below is a sample of four targets from three different datasets: two at the municipal level, one at the state level, and another one at the federal level:
To highlight the differences (particularly in the Jurisdiction and Party) this is how those target details would be broken down:
Name | Position | Jurisdiction | Party |
Brandon M. Scott | (Baltimore City Council President) | Baltimore city, MD | Democratic Party |
Bernard C. "Jack" Young | (Baltimore Mayor) | Baltimore city, MD | Democratic Party |
Kweisi Mfume | (Representative) | MD District 7 | Democrat |
Frank M. Conaway, Jr. | (State Representative) | District 40 | Democratic |
Test your action throughly by sending test messages in the review step to make sure that your conditions are set up properly.
