Set party leaders as party-specific fallback targets for candidates

Candidates who haven't published their contact details aren't in our database yet. Set party-based fallback targets so that supporters in ridings that are missing candidates can contact the respective party leaders instead.

This party-specific setup is different from the general fallback target setup on the Basic Configuration page. If you're familiar with this back-end setup from past elections, feel free to skip to one of our reference lists below:

What are party-specific fallback targets?

Party-specific fallback targets are a more powerful version of our basic Fallback Targets, as they supplement any missing candidate targets with party leaders. It's like asking the system to make sure that every supporter reaches one person at each of the parties: if one of the parties doesn't have a candidate in a given district or we don't have their contact details, the system will instead target the leader of that party.

Here's an example of what that looks like:

A supporter lives in a district where the Conservative party doesn't have a candidate, but all other parties do.
With basic Fallback Targets With party-specific Fallback Targets
The supporter targets all candidates in the database for their district but doesn't reach anyone at the Conservative party. The supporter targets all candidates in the database for their district along with the leader of the Conservative party.

Setting up party leaders as party-specific fallback targets

1. On the Edit tab of your action, open Advanced > Components:

2. Find the 'We'll notify your representative' component (look for 'Elected' in the Type column, especially if you changed this component's label) and click on Edit:

3. On the Elected component page, scroll past the Filters section to find the 'Fallback Target Count' drop-down menu:

4. By default, this is set to 'Enable fallback configuration on Basic Configuration tab' because that's where fallbacks are usually defined.

For this setup we'll define them here, so use the down-arrow to select the number of fallback targets you want to use (4 or 5 depending on the number of major parties relevant to your campaign).

5. For each fallback target, define when they'll be shown and who the target should be:

  • When the fallback target is shown:
    • Fallback Criteria: the conditions that the system looks for in the targets that come up to determine if the fallback target should be shown. Do any of the targets that come up match this condition? If the answer is no then the system shows the fallback target.

The format is "criteria|target detail to match" without any spaces between the three parts:
      1. Criteria: what kind of target detail you're matching against. It can be a target's jurisdiction, their position, their party, or their full_name, among others.
      2. Separator (|): this vertical "pipe" symbol goes between the criteria and the specific target detail, and it's not a forward slash ("/") or a backslash ("\").
On most keyboards the pipe symbol is on the same key as the backslash key, so you can type it by pressing the shift key and the backlash key at the same time (Shift+\).
      3. Target detail to match: the piece of target information the system will look for to matching against, which should align with the criteria you entered above.

For example, if you want supporters who don't have a Libertarian representative to contact Ron Swanson, you would enter party|Libertarian Party into the Fallback Criteria field and Ron Swanson's contact details as the fallback target.

    • Fallback Operator: how the system should handle multiple fallback criteria, if applicable.
      • Choose AND if you want the system to check that all of the conditions you entered above are met to determine whether to show the fallback target.
      • Choose OR if you want the system to check that at least one of the conditions is met to determine whether to show the fallback target.
  • Who the fallback target should be:
    • Enter their name, jurisdiction, position, and party, as you would like them to appear on the action or on the email.
    • Enter their email address, phone number, fax number, or Twitter handle in the appropriate field depending on the type of action you're using.

6. Click on the 'Save component' button to complete the setup.

7. Testing time! On the Basic Configuration page set your action to show targets, then open the Preview tab. Try entering a couple of postal codes or addresses that you know match the Fallback Criteria you set.
  • If the fallback target(s) you defined in step 5 come up it means that your Fallback Criteria setup is correct!
  • If you see the local target instead of the fallback target(s) you defined earlier it means that the target details you entered as the Fallback Criteria don't match what's in our database.

To correct that you need to set an exact match:
    1. Copy the relevant information from the target that came up
    2. Open a new tab on your browser and navigate to the Fallback Criteria field again there.
    3. Replace the target detail (the part after the | symbol) with the piece of information you copied.
    4. Click on 'Save component'.
    5. Check the Preview tab again and check the target that comes up. If it's still not the fallback target emails us at support@newmode.net and we can be a second pair of eyes to figure out what's wrong.
